Artist's Statement
Although I have spent time living in places very different from Iowa, much of my subject matter derives from my roots here. The Iowa summer landscape is a place that reverberates with the sound of cicadas, life, and growing things. Against the backcrop of a vast sky, nuances of weather can color the environment with rarified tones and sensation. There are moments when I feel as though the air becomes embodies with what I envision to be subtle abstraction.
My intent in painting is to capture an evasive underlying pattern within nature, one that is barely detectable beneath the chaos; structure, and variety of fractals. It is embodied in a thin, fragmented region at the threshold of our awareness, negative imagage of the material world and of our ephemeral culture. |
